Anti Snoring Devices

Snoring

Snoring is defined as an acoustic phenomenon, of variable intensity, caused by the vibration of the soft palate. This in turn is caused by turbulence inside the airway during inspiration due to a partial blockage of the airway passage.

Snoring is most prevalent in men, especially those over 60 years of age and is thought to be as high as 60%. One of the reasons quoted for this phenomenon is that fat deposition in men tends to occur in the upper body, particularly the neck. It is estimated that 40% of all women over 60 years of age as well as 10% of men and 5% of women over 30 years of age snore. Most are unaware of this fact!

The management of mild or occasional snoring may be alleviated by simple self-help lifestyle changes that the patient can initiate. These changes include losing excess weight, regular exercise plus an absence of alcohol prior to bedtime, heavy meals and medication that can induce drowsiness.

Whilst snoring itself is relatively harmless (although very irritating to a partner), it can also develop into, or be a symptom of a more serious condition known as obstructive sleep apnoea.

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), the most common form of sleep apnoea is characterised by the air being prevented from entering the patients' lungs, due to an obstruction. As a result, the patient stops breathing for a period of time. The obstruction is usually caused by a lack of muscle tone within the upper respiratory tract causing it to narrow. Patients suffering with OSA will find themselves waking up at night abruptly with a loud snore or sudden gasp of breath in order to obtain air. Overtime, patients suffering from undiagnosed OSA may find that they become lethargic during the daytime, which could place them in danger during normal tasks such as driving.

It is important to state that whilst the dentist can identify patients with sleep and breathing disorders and are well able to participate in their treatment, diagnosis and treatment are the domain of the medical profession.
