Soft Occlusal Splint

Soft occlusal splints are constructed from a transparent EVA plastic. These appliances are primarily used as a short-term, relatively low cost treatment for patients showing signs of pain dysfunction syndrome.

This appliance is also known as a soft bite raising appliance (BRAs) or ‘Night guard’. The splint will produce symptomatic relief for the majority of patients, although they are typically used in conjunction with other treatments.

Soft occlusal splints are one of the most commonly prescribed splints in dentistry and are highly adept at protection teeth by absorbing occlusal forces and reducing trauma.

Materials

Laboratory Requirements
- Good quality upper or lower impressions, taken using a five day stable alginate
- Full sulcus depth impressions
- Design instructions i.e. full coverage, Material thickness, and Posterior extension
Additional Information
- The splint is generally worn at night.
- This appliance may not be appropriate for many bruxers as the posterior contacts will increase elevator muscle activity, careful monitoring is essential.
